The most important point first
For many applications to medicine, the Medicine Subject Module does not count. The module Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences (MINT) does. So first check in the medicine overview what your university requires. The German medical admission tests are a topic of their own: the TMSnat from 2027 (in German) replaces the TMS, and a comparison of TMSnat, MedAT, TMS and HAM-Nat (in German) puts them in context.
The Medicine Subject Module exists only in the digital TestAS, not in the paper-based one (testas.de: with the TestAS to a German university).
Topics
According to g.a.s.t.: anatomy, physiology, biology, (bio)chemistry, psychology and sociology for medical students, and physics (testas.de: structure of the digital TestAS).
What a testlet looks like
A testlet describes a situation. It can be a text, often with a table or a formula. Several questions follow. Technical terms are explained in the testlet. So you do not have to know by heart what a clearance is. You have to understand it from the text and then work with it.
From the description by g.a.s.t. and the examples in the preparation PDF, we derive these question types:
| Type | What you do |
|---|---|
| Reading comprehension | Reproduce statements from a technical text correctly |
| Reading a table or diagram | Read off values, compare, spot trends |
| Calculating with a formula | Apply a formula from the text, convert units |
| Cause and effect | Think a process in the body through to the end, for example a control loop |
| Judging a study | Recognise what a study shows and what it does not |
The classification is our own, not g.a.s.t.’s.
Time
90 minutes for 10 to 15 testlets with 4 to 8 questions each. How many questions exactly come up is open. By calculation it is 40 to 120. By our estimate from the official examples, that leaves about 6 to 7 minutes per testlet.
How to prepare
- Read the questions first, then the text. That way you know what to look for.
- Calculate with units. Many wrong answers come from millilitres instead of litres or minutes instead of hours.
- Rely on the text, not on your prior knowledge. The testlet defines what applies, even if it simplifies.
- Practise tables. Many questions ask you to combine values from two columns.
